How a Moncton Web Design Agency Built a 650-Page Bilingual Website for Greenfoot Energy (Case Study)

The Largest Web Design Project Ever Built in Moncton

When most people search for web design Moncton, web designer Moncton NB, Moncton web design company, enterprise web design Atlantic Canada, bilingual website design New Brunswick, or multi-location website design Canada โ€” they imagine a 5-page brochure site. A homepage, an about page, a services page, a contact form, and maybe a blog. That is what most local agencies build.

That is not what we built for Greenfoot Energy Solutions.

From our headquarters in Moncton, New Brunswick, our team at GrowLocal Labs designed and engineered a 650+ page bilingual website spanning 21 cities, 5 Canadian provinces, 9 service verticals per city, 15 physical office locations, and 8 manufacturer brand pages โ€” all in both English and French, all hand-architected for programmatic SEO, local SEO, AI search (AEO), and geographic search (GEO).

This is the full story of that build, and what it proves about the kind of custom web development that is possible from a small, focused Moncton-based web design studio.

About the Client: A Canadian Energy Brand With National Ambitions

Greenfoot Energy Solutions is a Canadian residential and commercial energy company with operations across New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland & Labrador, and British Columbia. Their service catalogue includes:

  • Mini-split and ducted heat pump installation (residential and commercial)
  • Air conditioning systems
  • Residential and commercial solar panel installation
  • Spray foam insulation and general insulation upgrades
  • Indoor air quality and ventilation (HRV/ERV systems)
  • Geothermal heat pump installations
  • Water heater replacement and installation
  • Commercial HVAC systems

Greenfoot is also factory-certified for 8 major heat pump brands including Mitsubishi, LG, Daikin, Panasonic, Kerr, and their exclusive cold-climate brand Gridless. With 15 physical office locations across Canada and a Greater Moncton head office, they needed a digital platform that could match the scale of their real-world operations.

The Challenge: Why Most Moncton Web Designers Could Not Build This

The brief from Greenfoot was simple to describe and brutal to execute. They needed a website that could:

  1. Rank organically in 21 different cities for 9 different services in 2 languages โ€” that is 378 city-service-language combinations, before brand, location, and resource pages.
  2. Load in under 2 seconds on mobile, even with hundreds of pages and thousands of internal links.
  3. Be fully bilingual French and English with proper hreflang implementation, French-Canadian URL slugs, and culturally accurate translations โ€” critical for francophone markets in Dieppe, Moncton, Quebec, and Acadian New Brunswick.
  4. Be discoverable not just by Google but by AI assistants like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Perplexity โ€” the new frontier of search.
  5. Be maintainable by a non-technical marketing team without breaking the SEO architecture.

This is not a job for WordPress. It is not a job for Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, or any drag-and-drop builder. It is a job for a custom-coded website built by a development team that understands modern web architecture, programmatic SEO, and structured data โ€” the kind of work most web designers in Moncton do not do because they have never been asked to.

The Solution: Astro, Programmatic SEO, and a Deep Knowledge Network

1. Astro Framework: Speed Without Sacrifice

We chose Astro as the framework for this build. Astro is a modern static-site generator that ships zero JavaScript by default โ€” meaning every page is delivered to the browser as plain, fast-loading HTML. For a site with 650+ pages, this was non-negotiable. Every page on the new Greenfoot website loads in under 1.5 seconds, scoring 95+ on Google PageSpeed Insights, with perfect Core Web Vitals across mobile and desktop.

For Moncton businesses considering a custom website: your framework choice is your SEO ceiling. Astro, Next.js, SvelteKit, and similar modern stacks crush WordPress and Shopify on speed, which directly translates to higher Google rankings and lower bounce rates.

2. Programmatic SEO: 378 Pages, One Architecture

The crown jewel of the build is the city-service page system. Rather than hand-writing 378 unique pages, we built a programmatic content engine. Each of Greenfoot's 21 cities receives:

  • A dedicated city hub page (e.g. /locations/new-brunswick/moncton)
  • 9 individual service-specific sub-pages per city (e.g. /locations/new-brunswick/moncton/heat-pumps, /locations/new-brunswick/moncton/solar-experts)
  • French equivalents for every page (/fr/emplacements/nouveau-brunswick/moncton/thermopompes)

Each page pulls from structured data files containing city-specific information โ€” local climate, average installation costs, applicable rebates and government incentives, nearby cities, and Greenfoot office contact details. The result is content that feels hand-written for each market while being maintainable from a single source of truth.

This is the same approach used by industry giants like Zillow, Yelp, and TripAdvisor โ€” and it is exactly the kind of architecture Moncton web design agencies need to start using if they want to compete for serious enterprise clients.

3. Bilingual Done Right: hreflang, French URLs, and Cultural Accuracy

Greater Moncton is one of the most bilingual regions in Canada. We are uniquely positioned to build proper bilingual websites because we live and work in a market where French and English coexist every day. For Greenfoot, that meant:

  • Full hreflang tags on every page pointing to its French or English counterpart
  • French-Canadian URL slugs (not auto-translated machine slugs)
  • Culturally appropriate translations reviewed by francophone speakers โ€” not Google Translate output
  • Bilingual schema markup and metadata
  • Language-aware internal linking so French users stay in the French site and English users stay in English

If you are a Dieppe business, a francophone Moncton business, a Quebec brand expanding into the Maritimes, or any company serving bilingual customers, this is the standard you should expect from your web designer.

4. Structured Data and the Deep Knowledge Network

We built what we call a Deep Knowledge Network across the entire site โ€” a layered JSON-LD schema architecture using LocalBusiness, Service, Product, FAQPage, BreadcrumbList, Organization, and Place schemas. Every city page declares its geographic coordinates, service area, opening hours, and parent organization. Every service page declares its price range, service type, and the LocalBusiness providing it.

The result: Google understands the site as a graph of related entities, not just a collection of pages. That is why Greenfoot now appears in Google AI Overviews, gets cited by ChatGPT and Perplexity when users ask about heat pumps in Atlantic Canada, and pulls rich results in standard search.

5. The Nearby Locations and Other Services Mesh

Each city-service page links to the same service in nearby cities and to the other 8 services in the same city. This creates an internal linking mesh that funnels link equity efficiently across all 650+ pages โ€” and keeps users discovering more of Greenfoot's offering with every click.

The Results: Page-One Rankings and AI Citations Across Atlantic Canada

Within the first 90 days post-launch, the new Greenfoot Energy website was producing measurable wins:

  • Page-one Google rankings for high-intent terms like "heat pump Halifax," "solar installation Moncton," "mini-split Saint John," and dozens more across the city-service grid
  • Sub-1.5-second average load times across all 650+ pages
  • Active citations in Google AI Overviews when users search for heat pump and energy topics in Atlantic Canada
  • Mentions and citations from ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini when asked about Canadian residential energy providers
  • A unified, maintainable codebase the Greenfoot marketing team can extend with new cities and services without engineering help

What This Means for Other Moncton Businesses

You may not need 650 pages. Most Moncton businesses do not. But the principles that powered the Greenfoot build power every site we touch โ€” including yours.

Whether you are a Moncton restaurant, a Dieppe contractor, a Riverview clinic, a Shediac retailer, a Fredericton professional services firm, a Saint John industrial supplier, or a Halifax startup, the same engineering discipline applies:

  • Hand-coded HTML, not page builders
  • Sub-2-second load times
  • Full schema markup and structured data
  • Local SEO optimized for your specific city and neighbourhoods
  • Bilingual-ready architecture if you serve francophone customers
  • AI-discoverable content for the next decade of search

This is what real custom web design looks like, and it is the standard we hold every project to โ€” whether it is a 5-page small business site or a 650-page national platform.

Why Hire a Moncton Web Designer for a Project Like This?

Greenfoot could have hired any agency in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, or even the United States. They chose a Moncton-based web design studio for specific reasons:

  • We understand bilingual Atlantic Canadian markets โ€” because we live in one
  • We are accountable โ€” direct access to the founder, no account-manager middleman
  • We move fast โ€” small senior team, no junior handoffs, no sluggish enterprise process
  • We are transparent โ€” fixed scopes, fixed prices, no surprise change orders
  • We build to own โ€” clients keep the codebase, the hosting, the data โ€” everything

If a Greater Moncton agency can deliver a 650+ page bilingual platform that ranks across 5 provinces and gets cited by ChatGPT, imagine what we can do for your Moncton business website.
